After a great week of helping van dad sag in Alabama, it was time to load up and do what I was born to do…..or maybe assembled to do is the right terminology. It was time to boondock. Van dad had done enough of the van build that we were ready to go solo. No campsite needed. Van mom found the perfect place. The Bolivar peninsula. This peninsula encompasses 27 miles of beach shorline on the Upper Texas Gulf Coast. The beach in Crystal Beach Texas and on Bolivar Peninsula is one of a kind, and the last of its kind. Vehicles are allowed to drive on, park and enjoy all 27 miles of coastal waters. PERFECT! For a paltry $10 the van parents purchased a yearly pass and could camp anywhere they wanted on the beach.
Van dad was living large for sure…..well he kinda does everyday as he is a big guy. It was very interesting observing all the different people/vehicle types that perused the beach. There was old brown Doge van guy, orange Jeep guy, and old converted school bus guy, to name a few. There were definitely a number of folks living the van life in various forms.
I don’t have a shower yet, so a search for a public shower was pretty high on van moms list of things to do. “Yes, we have a brand new public shower facility just down the road from the beach”, responds the nice clerk at the hardware store. Van mom is so happy…….apparently the nice clerk at the hardware store forgets to mention that it is an outdoor shower. Attired in bathing suits and towels the van parents make their way to the showers. Nothing has ever felt quite so good. A shower is a wonderful thing and something van mom put on her “thanks journal”.
