Tuesday March 29th 2022. Cold and gray upon departure. Drove pretty much straight west on the 2 lanes avoiding any big cities. So many tidy and neat farms in Indiana and Illinois. We never tire of driving through farmland. Always something to see and comment about…..yes we are weird and we know it.
The day continued to warm up and by the afternoon we were finally feeling sunny and warm. We had a destination in mind with a state park backup if needed (still no open bathhouses, even in Missouri). Our spot of choice worked out great. It was the William R Logan Conservation Area. Our Overlander app said it had our favorite type of camping….FREE. This area covers about 1800 acres. Hunting, trap shooting, rifle range and camping all available. The road to the camp sites did have a gate, as it is still the shoulder of the shoulder season and the area was not fully open. We parked the van at the parking area for the clay shooting range. Perfect.
We were able to use our outdoor shower. Mike put in a 40 gallon water tank as well as a water heater. Works out great when you have 1800 acres to yourself.
