James works for a company called Bristow. This company is the leader in vertical flight solutions offering helicopter offshore oil and gas transportation and search and rescue services to civil and government organizations worldwide. His company supports an organization called the Brookwood Community in Brookshire Texas. This is about 20 miles from James and Amy’s place. Brookwood is a God-centered non-profit residential and vocational community for adults with disabilities located on 500 acres. They have a restaurant, green house and a large retail store and probably more that I don’t know about. It is an amazing place.
Bristow Uplift is the companies social responsibility program. It’s goal is to make a positive difference and build a strong community. We were privileged to participate in a Bristow Uplift opportunity at Brookwood. There are a number of residents that are training for a cycling event in October which raises money for Autism. We supported these residents in their Friday training ride by riding along side of them around a 1/2 miles course. The goal was to ride 5 miles, or ten laps.
The afternoon started with an amazing meal in the restaurant. We then were given a tour of the bike barn. This had the regular two wheeled variety as well as a number of three wheeled bikes, side by side tandems, and hand crank bikes. We then were paired with a resident and off we went. What a beautiful afternoon to be riding bikes and helping others at the same time. Sarah got her first proposal from a gentleman resident. I am pretty sure she turned him down.
