I always have to snap a shot of the state line and text it to Amy. That means we are close, although in Texas, close is subject to interpretation. We got an early start on the day for 2 reasons. The first being that I wanted to get out of the Red Rock Canyon campground asap. Second, Amy had tickets to the Blue Angels show on Friday. We wanted to end the day with about 3 hours left to Amys house.
Another beautiful day. I wanted to stop in Medicine Well on our way through. This town has a long and interesting history with mineral wells. They call the special water ” crazy water”
Due to the large draw of the crazy water that supposedly healed inside and outside, there is an enormous historic hotel. The Baker hotel was abandoned and fell into disrepair. It looks like the process of restoration has started. It is worth looking up on wikipedia and reading about the amenities offered at the hotel.
We walked the streets, got a cup of coffee, checked out a couple of shops and of course bought a bottle of Crazy Water. Our destination for the night was Mother Neff State Park. Mother Neff came from Virginia with her husband, bought 900 acres, bore 9 children, with the last child becoming governor of Texas. Obviously, quite the woman. She donated 6 acres for a park. More acreage was later added. This state park is the oldest in Texas.
This is a small park by Texas standards, but exceptionally clean and well laid out. We give Texas State Parks 5 stars. Everyone of them has been a great camping experience.
Much of the work on this park was done by the CCC, including a tower. Not sure of its purpose.
We hiked a trail to get to this tower, keeping a sharp eye out for snakes. Lots of warnings about them. The “short” walk was a bit longer than anticipated, which was fine by me, but I did hear a bit of wailing and teeth nashing behind me.
Rainy, stormy weather predicted for Friday. Amy texted that the air show was cancelled. Guess we don’t have to be in a hurry tomorrow morning.
